Melissa Gilbert is a Neo-Nesian multi-disciplinary artist who works with identity and pre-colonisation shamanism. Her roots in Tonga, Samoa, Fiji heavily influence her art practice. Although she was not brought using her mother tongue or customs, there is no doubt of her connection to those who came before her. Her art is motivated by the blood memories of her Polynesian ancestors through the vehicle of spiritualism. Constant talanoa of mumae such as colonisation, diaspora, afakasi imposter syndrome, in her work has opened up space to experience higher understanding of her connection to the Moana and ancestors. The medium ranges from performance to painting but act of talanoa and resourcefulness remains the same.
